Being non-binary is sometimes also described with the terms "non-binary" or "genderqueer". This is a particular type of gender identity. Those affected identify as neither male nor female ("agender") or as both male and female.
Being non-binary has nothing to do with physical gender characteristics. Instead, it is exclusively an expression of one's own identification.
In somewhat simplified terms, one could say that people who are non-binary do not want to (or cannot) be pigeonholed. When some time ago many celebrities came out as "non-binary", the topic became more and more in the focus of the public.
How do people who are non-binary feel?
Of course, this question cannot be answered in a standardized way. After all, every person is different. But the mere fact that for some time now there has been a name for the feeling that sufferers experience every day anew has helped many to understand themselves better as well.
Of course, it can also be that the feeling of being neither a man nor a woman, or both a man and a woman, is very confusing, especially at the beginning. In this case, of course, there is no shame in taking advantage of offers of help.
Can you tell by looking at people that they are non-binary?
Again, it is not possible to give a standardized answer. Some people live their non-binary existence exclusively inwardly. Others want to express their own identity by dressing or behaving neither particularly feminine nor particularly masculine.
However, many of those affected have to deal with a number of prejudices surrounding their own identity. Sentences like "You just don't know what you are yet!" or "It's just a phase!" are familiar to many people who identify as "non-binary".
What does "binary" mean?
Translated, "binary" means two-part. The designation aims at the fact that the classical, social norms only know two genders, the male and the female. There is nothing "in between" or even "outside" for them. Accordingly, traditionally minded people have little understanding for those who break out of this pattern.
Non-binary or genderfluid? What is the difference?
While non-binary people feel they belong to neither or both genders, genderfluid people's identification alternates between male and female. The length of the different feminine and masculine phases is completely different.
By the way, people who feel neither female nor male are called "agender". In short: Whoever deals with non-binary should always dare to look outside the box to realize that there is more than "I don't feel like a man or a woman!". Instead, there is a whole plethora of non-binary identities. This offers the advantage that it is possible for those affected to present themselves and their own identity even better to the outside world in the future. What used to be perceived by many only as a "diffuse feeling" has now been given a name... and is ultimately also one of the reasons why the rainbow flag is so colorful even apart from the colors.
So they disagree with themselves or how should I understand that?
