Gay bars for you in cool Hamburg
Hamburg defines itself as the high in the north and that is no exaggeration. Hamburg is a venue for shows, concerts, musicals, theater and opera. The Hamburg Ballet under John Neumeier enjoys world renown, the futuristic Elbphilharmonie attracts lovers of classical composition from Germany and the world to the liberal, cosmopolitan metropolis.
Of course, Hamburg also has a lively night and club life to offer, especially for you as a gay, lesbian or bisexual person. We can currently recommend 25 dedicated gay bars in Hamburg. The spectrum ranges from plush and cozy to ultra cool - surely there is also the right location for your dating and clubbing.
The Hamburg party scene - St. Pauli, St. Georg and more
We are not telling anything new to the real and naturalized Hamburgers among you, but for the gay community outside the Hanseatic city we have to say something about the party geography of Hamburg.
City/City Center
In Hamburg, this colloquially includes the area around the city hall and the stock exchange, Jungfernstieg and Binnenalster. Gänsemarkt, Mönckebergstraße, the so-called Old Town with the Kontohausviertel belong to it - in short, everything between the Elbe in the south and the so-called Ring 1, which you can easily find on the city map.
The city center is also alive after business hours. It is a tradition in Hamburg to go to a pub or bar for a nightcap after work - that's what the after-work drink is colloquially called in Hamburg.
For a gay more on the occasion applies one of the unofficial liberal Hamburg confessions - "Everything can, nothing must".
East of the city center, still within walking distance, is the main train station, with the gay and lesbian party mile of St. Georg behind it.
To the west, parallel to the Elbe River, is St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn, with its cross streets synonymous with the erotic side of Hamburg. From the city center, the Reeperbahn is best reached by subway or cab. With your own car, it can be difficult for you to find a parking space there in the evening.
Both districts offer you a whole range of locations for gay and lesbian clubbing and dating.
St. George
The district behind the main train station, which was disreputable in the 1990s, has been completely transformed. Chic and original restaurants, galleries and boutiques now characterize the local color of the neighborhood. You can easily find gay and gay-lesbian bars in and around the Lange Reihe, the magistrale of the district between Kirchenallee/Hauptbahnhof and Sechslingspforte.
A gay and lesbian Hamburg institution as a gay bar in Hamburg is the
Café Gnosa approximately in the middle of Lange Reihe, coming from the direction of the main station just before Schmilinskystraße. The crowd at Gnosa is mixed, and heterosexual people also like to stop in. Gay (first) dating there is discreet and takes place indoors rather than on the outdoor area facing the Lange Reihe. The cake at Gnosa has cult status.
Coming from the direction of the main train station, just before the Gnosa, you will find Café Uhrlaub, famous for its breakfast and an uncomplicated gay meeting place with friendly service.
St. Pauli/Reeperbahn
The Reeperbahn and the surrounding area have also undergone a structural change; it is now more chic, cleaner and more colorful than it was in the nineties.
In particular, the bar culture, once geared towards heterosexual middle-aged men, has become more colorful. Gay, lesbian and also heterosexual singles, couples and groups now populate the district in the evenings and at night.
Directly at the Reeperbahn, at the so-called Spielbudenplatz you can find
Angie's Nightclub, a hip gay and lesbian location with live music. A cool but relaxed after-work meeting place in the middle of Hamburg's number one party mile.
A little away from the hustle and bustle, between the end of the Reeperbahn and the St. Pauli fish market, lies Café Geyer, a stylish location with gay understatement.
Away from the party miles
Gay and lesbian life is an integral part of the Hamburg scene. Even in the outskirts you can find attractive gay and lesbian locations, like Café Schwesterherz in Alsterdorfer Straße, our insider tip for you.
